Less payment friction. More consumer confidence.

Balancing conversion, consumer trust, fraud prevention, and revenue protection across the payment journey.

The challenge

Legacy homegrown payment and fraud capabilities needed to evolve to support a modern consumer subscription experience. The product challenge was to reduce purchase friction while maintaining strong billing and fraud foundations.

Balancing the checkout

Four forces every checkout balances

Apple Pay expands payment flexibility and removes purchase friction at the moment of decision.

Optimizing one force alone breaks another—fast checkout without fraud controls loses revenue; heavy controls lose customers. Tap a force to explore.

What I led

  • Defined end-to-end consumer payment experiences, subscription billing workflows, and fraud decisioning strategies.
  • Led the migration from legacy homegrown capabilities to Recurly and Kount for subscription billing, fraud prevention, and payment management.
  • Introduced Apple Pay as a new payment method to expand consumer payment flexibility and reduce purchase friction.
  • Established payment and fraud foundations subsequently leveraged across broader consumer and enterprise products.

A key product decision

Bring in specialists for payments and subscriptions.

Consumer need

Our homegrown payment capabilities required us to maintain subscription billing functionality and carry the associated PCI compliance burden. We needed to decide where custom development created value and where specialist providers could serve us better.

My decision

I led the move to Recurly for subscription billing and Kount for fraud prevention, alongside defining the consumer payment experience and introducing Apple Pay. The strategy was to reduce our PCI compliance scope and let providers specializing in subscriptions handle those capabilities well.

The tradeoff

The tradeoff was greater dependence on external providers and the integration work required to connect their capabilities with our consumer experience. In return, we reduced the burden of maintaining those systems ourselves and could focus more product and engineering effort on differentiated consumer value.

Implications

The result was a modern billing and fraud foundation that supported the consumer product and was subsequently leveraged across additional products. The decision connected a better payment experience with a more sustainable operating model.

The outcome

Modern payment and fraud foundations

Introduced Apple Pay and migrated subscription billing and fraud capabilities to Recurly and Kount. These foundations were subsequently leveraged beyond the original consumer product.

The product perspective

A great checkout is not just fast. It also needs to build trust, support the consumer’s preferred payment method, and protect the business behind the experience.
